Vathek are not strangers to anyone in the Winnipeg metal scene. They've been punishing the ears and necks of music fans for sometime now... And they've just released a full length.
Upon starting the album, after the brief intro, they immediately set the tone. It's gritty and raw. A guitar trade off leading to involuntary head movement. The same thing can be said for the rest of the album. It's catchy and absolutely crushing.
The lyrical concept for the album is gory and brutal. With the ability to paint graphic scenes with the vocals, the album thrives. You can hear that they've spent time writing stories as opposed to just saying words. Let me tell you... They're good stories too.
The drums are a flavour of their own on Aborted Origins. Just when you think you have a moment to catch your breath with a slower guitar part section, he hits you with a gravity blast. When one section slows, another speeds up. The contrast led me to never being bored while listening.
The sound on the album is raw. The guitars have a good amount of crunch and bass. Bass tones slice through. Vocals are not lacking bass and are very prevalent. Drums sounds great, although, the snare was very, very snappy. Which with the gravity blasts were awesome because you could hear every hit. Though the rhythm sections I got slightly distracted with how loud it was.
All in all, this 10 piece bucket meal of metal will satisfy all of your Brutal Death Metal needs. It's groovy and deadly all rolled into one album. After multiple listens, I still find myself listening to this album when I'm looking for some easy listening brutal death. Perfect album to wash the dishes to... Or exceed speed limits too.
